About the event
What if we were to shoot up on mutualist utopias? What if we took pleasure in being useful to others again? What if we rethought mutualism? Or rather: what if we rethought mutualism as one of the possible paths to transformation?
of the world?
Since the 19th century, mutual societies have been one of the major forms of the social and solidarity economy. As non-profit partnerships, their aim is to organize solidarity between their members by covering their health expenses, insurance, and more broadly services for access to care, housing and retirement.
But today, mutualism hums on value words – democracy, solidarity, commitment, proximity – of which it no longer takes the trouble to question either the historical meaning, nor the present incarnation, nor the hopes for the future.
Faced with this, the author invites us to question based on a concrete experience of a mutualist leader and on a work of investigation with a philosophical dimension, in search of lost values. He denounces the laziness that leads to invoking these principles without making the effort to embody them in action. However, this effort would allow us to reinvent and rebuild mutualism, to reaffirm its social purpose, its reason for being and its singularity.
Christian Oyarbide chairs the mutual insurance companies Mutlog and Mutlog Garanties, after having managed La France mutualiste and then the Union mutualiste retraites. He also co-created and chaired the Cercle Vivienne, a think tank for social protection stakeholders.
